Equality Isn’t Always Fair: Why Equity Matters in Learning and Life
The other day, I had a conversation with my 14-year-old nephew about equality and equity. He was upset because his 9-year-old sister seemed to receive special consideration from their parents during disagreements. He asked, “Why don’t Mom and Dad treat us equally in every situation?”
It made me reflect on how often we face similar situations—at work or in life—wondering, “Why am I not being treated the same as others?”
We often hear terms like “equity vs. equality” in corporate trainings, books, or social media posts—but do we truly understand them? More importantly, do we practice them in everyday life, or are they just buzzwords we forget once the session ends?
🔹Equality means giving everyone the same resources or opportunities, expecting all to perform and succeed in the same way. But it often overlooks each individual’s unique circumstances and needs.
🔹Equity, on the other hand, means providing the right support, tailored to each person—so everyone has a fair chance to thrive.
I believe our minds are still more wired for equality than equity. But this shift in thinking must begin at home—by supporting those who need a little more, helping them stand shoulder to shoulder with others.
At QurioKid, we try to bring that equity mindset into science and math education for children in Grades 7–12. We listen. We adapt. We meet each learner where they are—so they feel seen, heard, and supported. Because real learning isn’t about rushing ahead; it’s about building confidence with care and consistency from an early stage—not just when exams or job interviews approach.
We’re perfectly okay if a child takes more time to grasp a concept. That doesn’t make them any less capable. In fact, what they learn deeply, they often carry for life. So why the rush?
Too often, we as parents overlook this. We want instant results and visible progress. But learning doesn't always follow a linear timeline.
QurioKid is a passion project by Eube Heidi and me—created to offer a space where children feel supported, not judged. A space where learning feels meaningful, not overwhelming.
The right guidance during their school years can spark a lifelong love for learning. Beyond improving conceptual understanding, we want to help children face exams without stress or fear.
We never see ourselves as superior to a child in knowledge or experience. We believe in standing on equal footing—meeting our bright young minds with respect and humility.
Currently, we offer one-on-one online classes in science and math for Grades 7–12. And we’ve just begun—there’s more to come for our curious, capable learners.
Let’s spark curiosity—together!
